Over the past two decades, DOE’s research and analyses have catalyzed the development of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies to address the need for separation and capture of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from worldwide industrial facilities while prompting the safe, permanent storage of CO2 in deep underground storage reservoirs. CCUS technologies are a critical tool to continue delivering United States energy security while focusing on decarbonizing the economy.

NETL’s Carbon Storage Program is a collection of projects conducted by NETL’s Research & Innovation Center (RIC) that focus on developing, implementing, and advancing CCUS technologies necessary for widespread commercial deployment in the 2025-2035 timeframe. Research, development, and deployment of these CCUS technologies manage and reduce current CO2 emission levels to protect our environment, enhance energy security, and further build the technologies and knowledge base for future work. This technology will also be available for export to other countries.

The Carbon Storage Portfolio is comprised of three RIC Field Work Proposals (FWPs) (listed below) that leverage advanced computational approaches, critical experimental data collected at temperature and pressure environments, and samples representative of real geomaterials in order to advance tools, technologies, and analyses that address technical and economic barriers for widespread deployment of CCUS, providing for mitigation of current and future CO2 emissions.
