The principal goal of this research is to expand current levels of industry development and production efficiency of natural gas from the extensive tight gas resource base of the U.S. Such low permeability and currently marginally economical reservoirs have been recognized by the 1992 National Petroleum Council Gas Study as the source of one-half or more of future national gas supplies. By the year 2030, over one-half of expected domestic gas production will be from low permeability reservoirs. By 2010, about 20% of the expected gas production will be from these reservoirs. Presently, about 2 trillion ft3 is produced annually from these tight reservoirs. Low permeability reservoirs are located throughout the U.S., but concentrated in the Rocky Mountain basins.
