The coal was Pittsburgh No. 8, crushed to a top size of 1/8 inch. Operating conditions were 16 atm pressure; 1385 to 1740/sup 0/F bed temperature and 3 to 4 ft/s fluidizing velocity. The slurry was pumped into the bottom of the fluidized bed through a water-cooled nozzle, and a small amount of air was used to break the slurry into globules. The tests confirmed that feeding crushed coal as a slurry into a PFBC is commercially attractive from an engineering and control point of view. Sulphur retention and NO/sub x/ emissions were substantially the same as obtained in the same combustor at the same operating conditions when burning the same coal fed as a dry, crushed material.
