Characterization of the coal with aid in understanding the optimal environmental conditions for stimulating the coal-to-methane producing microbial community. In order to ensure effective and safe nutrient amendment inject strategies, a thorough characterization must first be completed.

This project will characterize:

  • Coal rank
  • Interstitial fluid chemistry
  • Coal seam depth, temperature, and pressure
  • Coal seam porosity and permeability


Additionally, this project will utilize characterizations to model methane and fluid production and nutrient transport in the coal seam.
