A key product of NRAP Phase I efforts was a set of 10 science-based computational tools to facilitate risk assessment and inform decision making for carbon storage sites. The NRAP Phase I toolset has been downloaded hundreds of times by members of the international Carbon Captured Utilization and Storage (CCUS) community, garnered the attention of the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) leading NRAP to be designated as a CSLF-registered project, and earned a 2017 R&D 100 Award – considered the “Oscars of Innovation.”

The following is a list of the NRAP research tools and a general description of their function:

NRAP Integrated Assessment Model-Carbon Storage (NRAP-IAM-CS)

  • Simulates long-term, full-system behavior (reservoir to aquifer/atmosphere)
  • Results can be used to:
    • Compute risk profiles (time-dependent probability of leakage and GW impact)
    • Quantitatively estimate storage permanence amidst system uncertainty
    • Identify key drivers of risk in context of uncertainty
