National Emissions Reduction Initiative

Reducing methane emissions from the oil & gas sector

Overview

Driving innovation and delivering solutions for an environmentally sustainable and prosperous energy future.

The National Energy Technology Laboratory’s Research and Innovation Center (NETL-RIC) is experienced with decades of research and applied expertise in oil and gas well technologies, including methane detection and mitigation, characterization of wellbore integrity, the mitigation of fluid and gas leakage from wells, and broader oil & gas systems.

NEMRI Team Detecting Emissions

Providing Technical Assistance

The NETL-RIC National Emissions Reduction Initiative, NEMRI, is focused on providing technical assistance to states participating in the Methane Emissions Reduction Program – aimed at reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector through the Inflation Reduction Act under Section 136 of the Clean Air Act. The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act provided the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with over a billion dollars to reduce methane emissions, with an initial emphasis on marginally producing (less than 15 barrels per day) conventional wells (NEMRI Phase I).
