Unlocking data-driven capabilities for the entire CCS community

DOE Portfolios

Since 1997, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Carbon Storage Program has significantly advanced the carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) knowledge base and the development and validation of CCUS technologies through a diverse portfolio of applied research projects. In 2022, the storage program expanded to include carbon transport, thus creating the Carbon Transport and Storage Program. The goal of the program is to develop a carbon transport and storage industry at the scale necessary to decarbonize the economy.

The Energy Data eXchange for Carbon Transport and Storage (EDX4CTS) is part of the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) efforts to connect stakeholders to 30 years of digital products to accelerate commercial CTS deployment. EDX4CTS supports efficient and authoritative access to integrated products through the development of advanced, strategic carbon transport and storage (CTS)-specific digital infrastructure. The five-year project targets the deployment of strategic data integration, model/tool virtualization and access through the EDX digital platform in a CTS optimized user interface, EDX disCO2ver

The U.S. DOE’s National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP) is a collaboration of five U.S. national laboratories focused on quantifying and managing subsurface environmental risks to support implementation of safe and secure large-scale GCS, through the development of digital tools and models.

The Science-informed Machine Learning for Accelerating Real-Time Decisions in Subsurface Applications (SMART) Initiative is a ten-year, multi-organizational effort with the goal of transforming interactions within the subsurface and significantly improving efficiency and effectiveness of field-scale carbon storage and unconventional oil and gas operations.

NETL’s Advanced Offshore Research Portfolio is a suite of projects that focuses on innovative solutions to solve the challenges associated with geohazard prediction, subsurface uncertainty reduction, and oil and gas infrastructure integrity and optimization for new and existing infrastructure systems. While focused on offshore oil and gas, this portfolio is instrumental to informing offshore CTS.
