A characterization report describing cores through two coal resources in North Dakota has been published in collaboration with the Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC). This Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals (CORE-CM) project was led by EERC to examine the potential for rare earth mineral recovery from formations surrounding the Twin Buttes and Hagel Coal seams. The core was non-destructively characterized by the NETL research and innovation center with a combination of multi-scale computed tomography imaging and high-resolution multi-sensor core logging information. The critical mineral content measured in these cores was below the expected values, but still present.
