Unlocking data-driven capabilities for the entire transport and storage community

DOE Portfolios

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Transport and Storage Program focuses on expediting development of T&S infrastructure for subsurface energy applications through both regional and geologic basin efforts and research in materials and field laboratory testing. Concentration areas include leveraging AI & ML to enhance efficiency and quality of subsurface investigations, fast-tracking validation of novel technology for subsurface energy activities, basin-scale studies with cross-cutting applications and demonstrating approaches for advanced operational control and decision support.

The Energy Data eXchange for Carbon Transport and Storage (EDX4CTS) is part of the DOE Office of Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy’s (HGEO) efforts to connect stakeholders to 30 years of digital products to accelerate commercial T&S deployment. EDX4CTS supports efficient and authoritative access to integrated products through the development of advanced, strategic T&S-specific digital infrastructure. The project targets the deployment of strategic data integration, model/tool virtualization and access through the EDX digital platform in a T&S-optimized user interface, EDX Discover.

The DOE National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP) is a collaboration of five U.S. national laboratories focused on developing computational tools and workflows to quantitatively assess and support safe and efficient development and commercialization of T&S.

The Science-Informed Machine Learning for Accelerating Real-Time (SMART) Decisions in Subsurface Applications Initiative is an effort funded by DOE to help make better informed decisions related to the subsurface through real-time visualization, virtual learning and real-time forecasting.

NETL’s Advanced Offshore Research Portfolio is a suite of projects that focuses on innovative solutions to solve the challenges associated with geohazard prediction, subsurface uncertainty reduction and oil and gas infrastructure integrity and optimization for new and existing infrastructure systems. Although this portfolio is focused on offshore oil and gas, it is instrumental for informing offshore T&S projects.
