The DOE has used the information available in the Tertiary Oil Recovery Information System (TOruS) database to identify reservoirs with significant remaining production potential These reservoirs were grouped into classes having common geologic characteristics and ranked according to oil-in-place, recovery potential and risk of near-term abandonment. Such rankings were developed with the goal of prioritizing research efforts focused on recovering this resource. This report provides to the industry at large a review of background information regarding DOE's current understanding of the reservoirs known as shallow-shelf carbonates. It details information related to their geologic characterization, the improved recovery techniques having the greatest potential, and the principal impediments to increased production.
