A review of silicon carbide/metal interactions with relevance to silicon carbide joining

License(s):

Other (Open)

This report reviews the current understanding of elevated temperature interactions between metals and silicon carbide ceramics. For each of the metals examined, details available in the literature regarding wetting, reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and product phases are described, and these observations are discussed on the basis of phase equilibria considerations. The implications of these findings with respect to joining silicon carbide ceramics for elevated temperature applications are discussed. 22 refs.
