This chapter defines areas of basic research in analytical chemistry that would further energy development in the United States. The specific objectives of this study were: to define analytical problems of a generic nature that are or will be important to energy research, to assess the potential of current analytical research programs for solving these problems, to identify those analytical problem areas that could be considered for initial or additional support by DOE.
