At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission the Bureau of Mines undertook a feasibility study on the application of nuclear explosives to oil-shale mining and shale-oil production. A preliminary draft of the study suggested areas, or sites, possible suitable for testing the effectiveness of nuclear explosives to fracture buried oil shales as the initial step in the recovery of oil by in situ retorting.
