This paper presents a general discussion of the properties and characteristics of oil shales, shale oils, and their products and presents briefly the results of major phases of the research and process development work now in progress at the Laramie, Wyo. station of the Bureau of Mines. For the most part, the experimental work pertains to oil shale of the Green River formation in Colorado. The properties of products obtained by retorting the oil shale and refining its shale oil by several different processes are given. The properties of Green River Shale oil shale and it products are also compared with those determined for several foreign oil shales.
