The purpose of this study was to develop the background necessary for identifying processes which might be effective for the treatment of water developed in the in-situ retorting of oil shale. In this regard, literature information has been summarized dealing with several aspects of the retort water treatment and disposal problem. The specific information relates to the quantity of the water, its physical and chemical characteristics, and insight developed by other authors concerning possible treatment alternatives.
