"Research continued in the environmental and health evaluation of products, by-products, and effluents derived from shale oil and from processes that convert coal to liquids. The toxic nature of these materials is investigated by using various chemical, physical, biological, and ecological test protocols. Results are presented according to the functional character of the studies, many of which are generic to fossil energy derived liquids. The coal liquids and shale oil evaluation activities are identified in separate chapters of the report."
