Research in the environmental and health evaluation of coal liquids involves studies of the characteristics and toxic nature of products, by-products, and effluents derived from coal conversion processes. Also involved is the comparison of results with those of similar studies using other liquid fuel materials such as shale oil, many related programmatic activities were started more than five years ago, and the team approach to problem solution in life sciences dates back to programs in smoking and health and to the International Biological Program.
