The primary effort of the group was to determine the US potential supply of coal for the period 1975-1980. This Task Group is an integral part of the 90-day study ordered by President Ford in his announced objective to replace one million barrels of oil per day used as boiler fuel in electric generating plants with coal or nuclear energy by 1980. Potential increases in coal demand created by converting oil fired utilities to coal are given in Appendix A. The task group was composed of members from the Federal Government and industry. It was chaired by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Interior. A preliminary report was presented at a Coal Supply Workshop on December 4, 1974. Participants are listed in Appendix C.
