Shale oil, unlike petroleum, is not a naturally occurring product. It is formed by the pyrolysis of the organic matter in oil shale and its production is subjected to conditions that to a considerable degree determine its composition. Oil shales consist of inorganic material, which may differ considerably in composition but is usually predominantly clay, in conjunction with organic material.
