The goal of this three-year project is to develop a theoretical basis and practical technology for the integration of geologic, production and time-lapse seismic data in a way that makes best use of the information for reservoir description and reservoir performance predictions. The practical tools for data integration that will result from this research will be presented as computational algorithms that are feasible for large scale reservoir simulation models. As the integration of production and seismic data will require calibrating geological/geostatistical models to these data sets, the main computational tool developed will be an automatic history matching algorithm. While significant progress has been made towards achieving the goal by the authors of this proposal and others, important challenges on data integration remain, namely (i) the assessment of measurement errors necessary to determine the relative weights of data when conditioning reservoir models to production and time-lapse seismic data by automatic history matching, (ii) the development of procedures for upscaling/downscaling to ensure the proper integration of data on different scales; (iii) the development of algorithms for calibrating the location of the boundaries of geologic facies and the distribution of rock properties within each facies so that production and time-lapse seismic data are honored; (iv) the development of methodology to account for trends in permeability and porosity fields and the proportion of facies when history matching production data, and (v) the development of technology for the adjustment of laboratory derived relative permeability by calibration to production data. The starting point for this research will be the automatic history matching code developed for a previous DOE research project, Mapping of Reservoir Properties and Facies, DOE Project DE-FC26-00BC15309. In order to ensure the research results developed will lead to practical public tools for independent oil companies, as part of the project we will build a graphical user interface for the history matching software using Visual Basic.
