"During the summer of 1979 the Department of Energy instructed Paraho Development to mitigate the contamination of Colorado River waters by retorting products seeping from their Anvil Points raw shale pile. Prior to implementation of the mitigating measures, however, Tosco was asked to monitor the combusting pile both before, during, and after attempts at extinguishment. Although certain steps were taken to begin eliminating selected burning areas within the pile, the onset of winter forced a halt to the program. This report is an interim report prepared at the request of the Bureau of Mines on the current status of monitoring at the Anvil Points raw shale pile. Work on this study was requested by the Department of Energy through this Bureau contract and was strictly limited to gathering of combustion data in the raw shale pile and health and safety monitoring of product gases."
