"The Bureau of Mines proposes to conduct several small field experiments to test the technical feasibility of the reverse combustion process for in situ recovery of oil from tar sands. The site of the proposed experiments is in the Northwest Asphalt Ridge tar sand deposit near Vernal, Utah. These experiments, if successful, would provide engineering and environmental data that would enhance the planning and conduct of subsequent, larger scale field tests and eventual industrial development."
