This report discusses a generic aboveground oil shale retorting process, the effluent streams produced by such a process, and environmental, health, and safety concerns that currently may not be adequately understood or covered by regulations. Effluent data are scaled to an oil production rate of 50,000 barrels per stream day. The generic facility includes upgrading but not final refining, transportation, or use of finished products.
