EVALUATION OF A GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC METHOD FOR MONITORING H2S IN RETORT GAS--RESULTS OF A FIELD TEST AT THE LOW VOID VOLUME RETORT

This report describes part of a continuing effort to develop methods for determining S species in retort gas. In particular, previous experiments have evaluated various column types for their abilities to separate the various S compounds from each other as well as from interfering hydrocarbons. Fluorescence quenching of the S emission in the flame photometric detector by hydrocarbon species found in retort gas has also been examined. Such studies indicated that a standard, single flame FPD should be adequate for monitoring H2S in conjunction with an acetone-washed Porapak QS packed column, a combination used in this study. This column was selected also because it is supposedly inert to water vapor, a major component of retort gas and one which cannot be tolerated by many types of packing material.
