This report briefly describes the background of coal gasification in this country and abroad, the relationship between fixed-bed and alternate gasification technologies, and DOE's role in developing this technology so that it can be properly used in today's energy market within the current environmental guidelines. The report also describes, in limited detail, the evolution of the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) pilot plant, its current status, and the related projects that are utilizing this facility.
