The U. S. Department of Energy is authorized under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 to develop and manage a program for the safe and permanent disposal of high-level nuclear waste. This waste is generated either during the production of electricity in commercial nuclear power plants, or during the production of nuclear materials for national defense.
