The US Department of the Interior, through the Bureau of Mines, has developed an underground mine near Rifle, Colorado, to demonstrate mining methods and procedures and to establish costs for producing oil shale on a commercial scale. This project is part of the program being carried on by the Government to demonstrate methods for producing substitute liquid fuels to augment the nations supply from natural petroleum.
