An experimental program is underway to stimulate the in situ gasification of coal. A laboratory combustion tube together with extensive auxiliary equipment have been designed and assembled. This apparatus has been successfully operated and data has been collected which stimulates in situ gasification. This laboratory reactor, its operation, and some preliminary data are reported. Problems in interpretation of the data are reported.
