Large Pilot Testing of Linde- BASF Advanced Post- Combustion Carbon Dioxide Capture Technology at a Coal-Fired Power Plant

The University of Illinois is evaluating the design, construction, and operation of a 10 megawatt-electric (MWe) capture system based on the Linde-BASF advanced amine-based post-combustion capture technology at a coal-fired power plant. The project consists of three phases. Phase I has been completed and consisted of a feasibility study that (1) outlined preliminary engineering designs; (2) conducted preliminary analysis of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)-related issues; and (3) concluded selection of a host site for Phases II and III. Phase II efforts are underway, consisting of a detailed front-end engineering design (FEED) study, NEPA permitting and documentation, and cost-share commitments. If selected for Phase III, the project will support construction and operation of the large-scale pilot facility. The
Fossil Fuel Large-Scale Pilots effort supports the design, construction, and operation of large test facilities for transformational carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technologies aimed at enabling step-change improvements in coal-powered system performance, efficiency, and cost of electricity (COE).
