At Westinghouse, the ceramic cross flow filter was developed for particulate control in applications for high temperature, high pressure systems such as pressurized fluidized-bed combustion, and integrated gasification combined cycle power generation. The objectives of this program were to improve the reliability and mechanical integrity of the basic porous ceramic filter element. The scope of the activities included improving the filter manufacturing process, the filter element design configuration, and the ability to effectively mount and seal the filter element in an operating system. The effort was focused primarily on the development and manufacture of the Coors cross flow filter which was fabricated from an alumina/ mullite matrix using a stacked-plate construction. Manufacture and design iterations performed as part of this program were evaluated, in part, in companion durability and qualification programs, as well as in field test programs which have been reported separately. Durability and field test results are summarized for clarity, where appropriate.
