Varied information has been published concerning the metal content of petroleum (4,6,14,17) but the data are limited for crude oils from definitely known geographic and geologic sources. The samples analyzed in many instances have been mixtures or have been only partially identified. For this investigation 24 petroleum were collected by the Geological Survey and analyzed semi quantitatively for 27 elements and quantitavely for vanadium, nickel, copper and uranium. In addition, they were analyzed by the routine Bureau of Mines crude oil analysis method (18). These petroleum's can be associated geographically with the oil field and geologically with the producing formation.
