During the test runs covered by this report, a state-of-the-art gas cleanup system was developed and demonstrated. This system cleans the gas from the dirtiest kind of gasifier, the fixed-bed type, when fed with the dirtiest type of coal, an Eastern bituminous variety that yields considerable volumes of high boiling tars that are virtually solid at ambient conditions. The innovative cleanup system enhances the treatability and final disposition of the effluent by sequentially separating coal dust, tar, oil, foul water, sulfur, and alkali metals. In addition, the amount of foul water is limited to the condensate from unreacted steam in the raw gas from the gasifier. Mechanical and operational problems during runs 95 through 100 resulted in many forced outages. Interestingly enough, most of these were attributable to the gasifier itself, rather than to the cleanup system. Because the focus in all these runs was on achieving and improving operability, the quality and quantity of data suffered. This is especially evident in the material balance closures. 26 refs., 10 figs., 25 tabs.
