MINERAL PROFILE OF OIL SHALES IN COLORADO CORE HOLE NO. 1, PICEANCE CREEK BASIN, COLORADO

License(s):

Other (Open)

Mineral profiles of oil shales in the Green River Formation in Colorado Core Hole No 1 were made by the US Bureau of Mines using x-ray diffraction data. The corrected peak heights of 8 minerals and the oil yields in gal/ton of the samples were plotted against depth. The mineral distributions are described in relation to 4 mineral zones of widely used stratigraphic divisions. Relationships between minerals and between mineral amounts and organic matter amounts were investigated statistically. Direct relations between the organic content and the amounts of silicate minerals were the most significant correlations found.
