With the current energy crisis at hand, it is inevitable that unlimited consumption of natural resources at traditionally low prices is approaching an end. Shortages and rising prices have forced the energy industry into a future of developing new energy sources and methods of increasing production from traditional sources. Unconventional resources, including tar sands, must be developed if the world is to have a supply of fossil fuels at the lowest possible economic cost.
