Pyridine type basic nitrogen compounds were found to adsorb strongly to surfaces of mineral aggregates used in pavement construction. Studies utilizing elemental nitrogen determinations and the nature of the interactions between basic nitrogen compounds and mineral aggregates showed that the strength of the interactions varied with mineral type. Results of the studies showed a good correlation between pyridine type interactions and the susceptibility of the bituminous mixtures to moisture damage using two different laboratory moisture damage tests. Thermal studies were used to evaluate the desorption decomposition characteristics of nitrogen compounds in bitumens on aggregate surfaces. This technique also identified the presence of an antistripping agent in a bituminous mixture.
