Two crude shale oils from the Bureau of Mines, Rifle, Colorado, were used for cracking studies and preparation of boiler fuels. They were cracked both in an autoclave under pressure and by atmospheric distillation. Pressure cracking in the presence of petroleum fuel oil and coal tar products was conducted in an attempt to reduce the formation of coke. The latter results maybe attained with shale oil alone if temperature and time are carefully controlled. Boiler fuels from shale oil cracking mist be blended to meet Navy Grade Special fuel oil specifications. Shale oil residue from cracking is compatible with most cracked petroleum fuels but is not compatible with straight run fuels of petroleum origin. Light stability of gasoline fractions from one shale oil was studied.
