Nitrogen compounds in petroleum

Nitrogen occurs in petroleum in amounts ranging from a trace up to slightly less than 1 percent. A survey of data on the crude oil produced in 1955 indicated that nationwide, the average nitrogen content was 0.148 percent by weight. Other data from the survey are shown in Table 1. The five states listed are those which produced the greatest amounts of petroleum in 1960.
