Oil shale and shale oil: brief review of work by United States Bureau of Mines

License(s):

Other (Open)

The work discussed in this article was done to aid in establishing the availability and utility of oil shale as a source of liquid fuel in the United States. Indications are rather definite that oil shale from U.S. Naval Reserve No. 1 situated in Colorado will yield oil that can be used directly as fuel for steam boilers, or from which gasoline can be made by commercial processes or by minor modifications of such processes. Considering all phases of the problem, the N-T-U retort is apparently better adapted for use in the United States than in the Pumpherston retort. Both retorts will give a high yield of oil, but coking shale will plug the Pumpherston retort.
