OIL SHALE SAMPLES IN PLOWSHARE GNOME EXPERIMENT

License(s):

Other (Open)

Eleven Green River oil shale core samples were exposed to shock of a nuclear blast at the Gnome experiment. From effects on the mine samples recovered oil shale is a tough, fracture resistant rock which largely remained intact. Grouting concrete and the stainless steel cases both failed before the oil shale. Fractures produced were primarily influenced by core shale and cannot be considered an exclusive property of the oil shale. Results were somewhat obscured by apparent motion of some of the capsules through space during the blast. Primary results of this experiment was learning how to conduct a more meaningful test.
