Opportunities in underground coal gasification

Underground Coal Gasification in Steeply Dipping Beds has been proven to be a technically feasible process for producing alternate fuels from coal. Coal resources which are not economically minable using conventional coal mining methods can be utilized by in situ techniques. Utilization of the coal resources in steeply dipping beds will increase the recoverable coal in the US to a much greater degree than that which is economically minable today. The success of the Bawlins field tests, economic factors, the large steeply dipping coal resourse, and existing and potential markets for UCG products indicate that commerciallization of UCG should be considered.
