The determination of nitrogen contents of shale oils has been shown to present a definite problem. Seventeen laboratories, largely from the petroleum and coal tar industries participated in a shale oil exchange nitrogen analysis program. The reported values for the nitrogen contents of the three shale oil samples distributed were not consistent among laboratories.
