The Royster process pilot plant is a gas-circulating, batch-retorting unit wherein product gasses serve as the retorting medium. The pilot plant was originally designed and fabricated for low-temperature coal carbonization studies at the Pittsburgh Central Experiment Station. The unit was never corrected at Pittsburgh and was subsequently loaned to the Rifle Oil-Shale Demonstration Plant for use in oil-shale retorting investigations.
