Separation of nitrogen compound types from hydrotreated shale oil products by adsorption chromatography on basic and neutral alumina

The nitrogen compounds in hydrotreated shale oil products derived from Paraho shale oil are separated into specific nitrogen-type fractions by using basic/neutral alumina adsorption chromatography. The separation scheme, which gives fast and reproducible results, is successfully applied to shale oil products produced under different hydrotreating conditions. These products vary in the level of nitrogen and/or in the distillation range. Infrared spectrometry of the fractions identified three major nitrogen compound types: pyridine-type nitrogen, pyrrole-type nitrogen, and amide-type nitrogen. The distribution of these nitrogen types in various hydrotreated shale oil products is shown.
