Key Findings:

  • This paper described a Bayesian approach to estimating in situ stress and geomechanical risk associated with subsurface fluid disposal.

  • The approach allows the expression of information relevant to geomechanical analysis in statistical rather than deterministic terms so that a probabilistic analysis can be performed for geomechanical risk assessment

  • The method was demonstrated using data from an active enhanced oil recovery/geologic carbon sequestration field as a case study (Farnsworth unit, TX) to construct a 1D elastic geomechanical model.

  • Part of the approach presented was implemented in the NRAP State of Stress Assessment Tool (SOSAT)
