Geokinetics, Inc. is currently developing, on a cost sharing basis with the US Department of Energy, a horizontal modified in situ process for production of oil from oil shale. This program was initiated as a result of the 1977 Oil Shale Program Opportunity Notice, and development has proceeded through a number of field demonstration tests. This technology appears to be a potential candidate for early commercialization. Consequently, Harris & Associates, Engineers, was engaged by LETC to conduct an independent study to establish the bases for an economic analysis of production of shale oil by the Geokinetics horizontal in situ oil shale retorting process.
