The process of in situ coal gasification is difficult, if not impossible, to observe directly in detail. Full-size field tests, when run to completion, destroy all evidence of the early stages of burn cavity growth, and laboratory size tests are too small to ever get past the very early stages of growth. Hence, we lack a good understanding of how the burn cavity development is affected by the process variables and how this growth affects gas composition and resource recovery.
