In direct and indirect ways, the thermophysical properties of oil shale influence every stage of the shale oil extraction process from exploration and resource definition to mining, retorting, and upgrading. For example, knowledge and understanding of the electrical and acoustical properties of oil shale as a function of grade, mineraolology, and structure significantly enhance geophysical based resource definition and rubble evaluation measurements.
