A prerequisite and initial focus of this research program was the development of measurement techniques specifically designed towards the study of the thermophysical properties of (fossil fuels) reacting materials. Measurement problems peculiar to studies of complex, heterogeneous materials such as oil shales necessitated major modifications in commercially available equipment. Part I of this report covers the apparatus, procedure and calibration for the following: (1) thermal conductivity; (2) thermal diffusivity; (3) dielectric analysis; (4) microwave dielectric analysis; (5) acoustic velocity measurements; and (6) specific heat measurements. Part II on experimental results and model calculations includes: (1) general introduction; (2) sample preparation; (3) experimental results; (4) application of experimental data to four model calculations relevant to oil shale technology; and (5) summary and conclusions. 84 refs., 104 figs., 14 tabs.
