SubTER - Sensor Technology for Wellbore Integrity Monitoring
Industry Partnership Group. In response to needs identified within the SubTER cross-cut initiative, NETL will execute an integrated research and development (R&D) effort targeted at development of a suite of complementary, multi-functional sensor technologies. Thin film sensing layer and device functionalization research will be pursued in parallel with device development and design efforts to enable the successful chemical sensitization of all three classes of devices. Significant emphasis will also be placed on development and demonstration of techniques for successful embedding of sensors within representative wellbore materials including the integration of optical fiber-based sensors and wireless sensor devices into wellbore cements, as well as additive manufacturing-based techniques for embedding of optical fiber sensors into representative casing alloys. NETL will perform detailed characterization of sensor-infused wellbore materials to quantify and minimize impacts of embedding sensors into cements and casings on structural integrity, corrosion resistance, and fluid permeability.
